Plenty more fish in the sea?21 March 2012
During February this year leading members of the Marinet local group network on marine campaigning met with Government officials. Their aim: to discuss the reform of the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP).
Some of Marinet's key points were:
- EU fish stocks currently only meet our needs for six months of the year.
- We have to rely on importing fish from the rest of the world.
- We must achieve food security by rebuilding fish stock levels to levels last seen at the end of World War 2.
Marinet's Co-ordinator went on to recommend that
it is most important that the UK seeks to lead on real and genuine CFP reform...
Stephen Eades, Marinet
You can read a policy briefing sent to DEFRA by Marinet, outlining what the CFP policy reforms should include on Marinet's website
In connection to this, there is also a document outlining EU laws that the CFP reforms must be in compliance with, also available on their website
If you'd like to support Marinet in their campaign to reform the CFP, you can sign their petition.
