Free, easy and helps the planet. What more could you want from a Christmas card?

Friends of the Earth has just launched this year's Christmas ecards - which for the second year running showcase the winner and shortlisted images from our Cold Snap Photo competition.

We run the odd photo competition each year and I always get a buzz of excitement from the quality of the submissions. It's a joy to share the judging with the wider public.

Once we've weeded out the pictures of Auntie Mavis in a Christmas hat from all the fantastic entries, it is hard narrowing it down to a shortlist of just 12 images.

Our winner this year is Iain Buchanan for Sheep in the Snow. Like most entrants Iain is not a professional photographer, but he was overjoyed at winning and is going to put his prize money towards a new camera.

So please join me in sending a few ecards this Christmas, and congratulating everyone who took part. I'm sure you'll agree there's a great choice - a cheeky snowmadam for the little 'uns, a beautiful landscape for my mum, and of course, one for Auntie Mavis in her Christmas hat.
