A Climate Change Manifesto
11 December 2008

The Government can tackle climate change while creating a strong and sustainable economy for everyone.

Friends of the Earth's new climate change report: A Manifesto for a Low Carbon Economy shows how.

The Climate Change Act is a world first. It commits the UK to 80% green house gas emissions by 2050.

Under the Act, the Government must set its carbon budgets next spring. But to deliver high enough emmisions cuts it must face up to urgent questions.

Did you know?

The Committee on Climate Change (CCC) is an independent body established under the Climate Change Act to advise the Government on setting carbon budgets.

With a strong budget the UK could lead the world in stopping climate change.

With a weak one the UK will lose the opportunity to prevent colossal loss of life. It will miss the chance to deliver a strong low-carbon economy.

The stakes could not be higher. But the way forward is possible.

The UK is in a position not only to take the lead on cutting emissions, but also to realise the opportunities from doing so

A Low Carbon Manifesto

The report details the building blocks of a strategy to:

  • Tackle climate change
  • Boost the economy
  • Create a fairer society

at the same time.

The Government must:

  • Prioritise climate change
The Treasury and Cabinet should take responsibility
  • Choose polices that work for people
Insulating homes benefits the fuel poor and the planet
  • Maximise economic benefits
By creating more green jobs and boosting business
