Climate goals at risk as energy plans unveiled
23 November 2012

Government's new energy plans pave the way for Chancellor George Osborne's reckless dash for gas.

They have ignored advice from the Government's independent climate advisors that say a target for carbon-free power by 2030 is needed to meet our climate goals.

The upcoming Energy Bill will decide how we power Britain for the next generation - from fossil fuels and nuclear, or clean renewable energy.

Without a clean power target it's a green light for business-as-usual, high carbon, high cost energy generation for decades to come.

Gas price rises

Rising gas prices have been the primary driver behind higher energy bills, which have more than doubled in the last 10 years.

A switch to clean, home-grown energy and reducing energy demand would remove our reliance on expensive gas imports, costing people less in the long-term.

Climate change

A polluting dash for gas risks busting our targets to tackle climate change.

This is the final nail in the coffin of Cameron's pledge to lead the greenest Government ever... this decision will drive away green jobs and investment and jeopardise UK climate goals - Andy Atkins, Executive Director

The fight goes on

There's huge support for clean electricity. Labour, the Liberal Democrats, and over 100 businesses and charities want a 2030 target in the Energy Bill.
