Climate Plan needs toughening26 February 2009
People in Yorkshire and the Humber have already started to get a feel for what climate change will bring.
Flooding has forced many people to leave their homes and live in temporary accommodation for years.
So our regional decision-makers must respond to the challenge of climate change.
The region's master plan has ambitious targets to reduce carbon emissions.
But independent reports say the current master plan won't deliver these cuts on its own. We need a tough regional Climate Change Plan to do that for us.
The draft Yorkshire and Humber Climate Change Plan has some good ideas about delivering carbon dioxide cuts. But it needs to be stronger.
We think the Climate Change Plan should:
- Set a challenging carbon budget for the region.
- Identify the carbon cuts from each sector.
- Ensure we keep on track every year.
By taking these steps we can make sure Yorkshire and the Humber becomes a truly low carbon region.
