1st Jun: Climate talks begin1 June 2009
UN climate talks have resumed this week in Bonn, Germany.
This meeting - which lasts until 12 June - is one of several leading up to crucial climate talks in Copenhagen later this year.
These talks are needed for the UN to agree:
- New targets for developed countries
under the next phase of the Kyoto Protocol. - New money for developing countries
to fight climate change. - Protection for forests
ways to protect forests from deforestation.
What is needed?
Strong new targets for developed countries are essential for two main reasons:
- Strong emissions cuts
At least 40 per cent by 2020 is needed to avoid dangerous climate change. - Progress during the talks
depends on action by developed countries.
What action is required
Historical responsibility means that developed countries must act first and fast.
Developed countries are responsible for three quarters of all emissions in the atmosphere today.
But they have less than 20% of the world's population.
Global voice
Friends of the Earth member groups from around the world are here in Bonn to make our voice heard.
We will campaign to achieve strong and fair action on climate. We'll keep you updated on the talks over the next two weeks.
Press for change
Take action and urge world leaders to do the right thing in Copenhagen in December.
