Government hears why Energy Bill needs to help tenants
18 March 2011

Friends of the Earth and Citizens Advice this week handed a letter to Energy Secretary Chris Huhne signed by thousands of our supporters.

We're calling on the Government to take action on the nation's coldest homes by passing a new law in the Energy Bill ensuring that properties rented from a landlord must meet a basic standard of insulation and heating.

The letter asked Chris Huhne to listen to the moving experiences of life in cold homes that our supporters have sent to MPs.

166 MPs have now signed a Parliamentary motion supporting the campaign.

The campaign is also backed by 35 organisations including:

  • consumer rights groups
  • health and environment organisations
  • tenants rights groups
  • councils.

Citizens Advice Bureaux across England and Wales work directly with people affected by fuel poverty and poor housing.

Last year their bureaux dealt with more than 110,000 fuel debt enquiries from the public, a one third increase on the previous year.

The stories of the reality of life in cold homes that Friends of the Earth supporters have sent to their MPs reflect the problems our bureaux see on a daily basis. It's vital that the Government listen to these moving experiences and act in the Energy Bill to ensure no one has to live in a dangerous cold rented home
