Government climate and councils consultation4 September 2009
The Government announced a new consultation in July: Strengthening Local Democracy.
It raises important questions about how councils will deal with climate change at the local level, including:
- Whether local government needs new powers to tackle climate change
- Suggestions for a carbon trading system for local government
The fact that the Government is turning its attention to carbon reduction in local communities is welcome. It's a great opportunity for the Get Serious About CO2 campaign.
However, Friends of the Earth has some concerns about how a trading system would work in detail.
Friends of the Earth response
Friends of the Earth has drafted an initial response to the consultation. You can use this if you or your group wants to respond.
If you want to respond directly, email the department for Communites and Local Government at localdemocracyconsul@communities.gsi.gov.uk
Please email donna.hume@foe.co.uk to say you've done so.
If you want to act, but don't have time to write your own response, you'll be able to press for change online towards the end of the month.
Does this affect our campaigning for councils to Get Serious About CO2?
It's likely to be the new year before the Government acts on this consultation. We'll keep you updated on how it affects the Get Serious about CO2 campaign.
Now, keep campaigning for councils to Get Serious about CO2. The science demands that major CO2 cuts needs to happen on the ground.
Getting your council to pass a motion to back:
- CO2 cuts of at least 40 percent.
- More money, less hassle to act on climate
- A duty on councils that fail to act
is key to making these cuts happen.
Questions?
If you need to find out more about the consultation in the meantime email donna.hume@foe.co.uk. Or call the Get Serious Policy hotline, every Wednesday from 12-2 and 6-8pm on 0845 872 3366.
