Worst corporate lobbyist
15 December 2009

To the Klimaforum where the Angry Mermaid awards are being announced.

These, you might remember, are for the worst corporate lobbying on climate change.

Biotech giant Monsanto takes first prize with 37% of the vote.

It's followed by Shell in second place and the American Petroleum Institute.

An impressive 10,000 people sent in their nominations.

Writer and campaigner Naomi Klein (pictured above) is there to announce the winner - as is Nnimmo Bassey, Chair of Friends of the Earth International (pictured below).

Monsanto was nominated for promoting its genetically modified (GM) crops as a solution to climate change and pushing for its crops to be used as biofuels.

The expansion of GM soy in Latin America for animal feed is contributing to major deforestation and greenhouse gas emissions.

It is also wrecking lives as small farmers are forced off their land to make way for soy plantations.
