40 councils across the country support our campaign23 March 2011
Council leaders across the country have joined our call for a new law to ensure every local area does its bit to tackle climate change.
40 council representatives have signed our petition to Climate Change Secretary Chris Huhne calling for action from all local authorities to cut emissions across their local area.
A new law in the Government's Energy Bill would help all councils lead ambitious action to slash CO2 - things like:
- insulating homes and businesses
- generating green energy
- encouraging walking and cycling and improving public transport
This would cut energy bills and improve energy security.
Support from all sides
An impressive cross-party group of council leaders backed the scheme from the start and local authorities have continued to add their names.
And with more and more councils signing up to cut their carbon emissions, there's clearly real support to create a sustainable future.
Leaders from all types of council - from small districts right the way up to large cities and counties - recognise the benefits the new law would bring to their communities, from new jobs to warmer homes.
Residents, businesses and institutions like schools and hospitals could work with councils to decide together how to transform their area into a clean, low-carbon community.
Now we need to make sure MPs hear this message too.
MPs across the country are being lobbied by Friends of the Earth local groups along with other members of the Stop Climate Chaos coalition.
Together they're calling for a strong Energy Bill to help kick-start the green overhaul the UK desperately needs.
