New guide to help local authorities tackle climate change8 November 2010
Friends of the Earth has produced a new guide on planning guidance for local councils.
The local planning system has a key role in tackling climate change.
Local authorities decide whether new and existing developments must reduce greenhouse gas emissions and how they should do so.
The Government has said that it wants local authorities and communities to take more responsibility for planning.
And with around 80 per cent of the UK's carbon emissions resulting from local activity, it's vital that the right decisions are made.
Our new guide, produced along with the Planning and Climate Change Coalition, of which Friends of the Earth is a member, contains model policies we want to see local councils adopt to make sure:
- we cut our CO2 emissions.
- renewable energy projects get the permission they need to go ahead.
