Survey reveals only a quarter of councils have target to cut emissions4 April 2011
Less than a third of England's 354 councils have a plan to tackle climate-changing emissions this decade and beyond.
A new survey by Friends of the Earth has revealed that just 28 per cent of the 354 councils in England have a target to cut emissions between 2015 and 2035.
And just 22 councils have a target to cut carbon locally that is in line with the scale Government advisors say is needed nationwide.
Friends of the Earth's Liz Hutchins said:
Our research shows the voluntary approach to tackling climate change locally is not working - while some councils are leading impressive action to cut carbon, most are being left behind.
We're calling for the Government's new Energy Bill to help all councils do more to slash CO2 including:

insulating homes and businesses
-
generating green energy
-
encouraging walking, cycling and improving public transport
This would help every community benefit from new green jobs, cheaper energy bills and more energy security.
