Councils crucial to combat climate change
17 May 2012

Ministers must ensure all councils reduce their carbon emissions - according to the Government's official climate adviser.

In a new report, the Committee on Climate Change warns that we won't meet our emissions targets unless every council does its bit.

Friends of the Earth put this issue in the spotlight with a well-supported campaign.

Business groups and 40 councils signed up to make local authorities responsible for their share of carbon emissions.

I welcome the Committee on Climate Change recommendation that every council should have an ambitious local carbon plan - and funding from the Government to do it.

Cllr Keith House, Eastleigh

"Eastleigh Council is pushing ahead with ambitious plans of its own, but the Committee is right to say that every council must do its bit," added Councillor Keith House.

The report calls on the Government to:

  • Require councils to draw up ambitious carbon reduction plans
  • Provide funding for the plans

This is a stark warning the Government can't afford to ignore - UK climate targets won't be met unless ministers ensure every council plays its part in slashing emissions, and has the funds to do so.

Benefits of local action

The report highlights how council action on climate change could also:

  • Reduce fuel bills
  • Boost the local economy
  • Create jobs

Climate Change Minister Greg Barker must now decide whether Government will accept its recommendations.
