Darlington MP vows to work for stronger Energy Bill
28 April 2011

Darlington MP Jenny Chapman has vowed to push for a stronger Energy Bill. She made the pledge at a packed public meeting in Darlington.

The Stop Climate Chaos event was part organised by Darlington Friends of the Earth and focused on councils, homes and energy security.

A strong green Energy Bill

The Government says its new Energy Bill will cut CO2 and create thousands of jobs. But Friends of the Earth believes the Bill before Parliament is inadequate.

It has no legally binding targets for cutting carbon and fails to tackle the problem of fuel poverty - where people can't afford to properly heat their homes.

Ms Chapman promised to push for a stronger Bill that would help people escape fuel poverty and would include mandatory emissions reduction targets for councils.

Friends of the Earth's Tony Bosworth said Tees Valley was the "Saudi Arabia of renewable energy" with huge potential for new jobs and cheaper bills.

A strong, green Energy Bill would benefit everyone. A switch to renewable energy and well-insulated homes would mean:

  • Thousands of new jobs
  • Warmer homes
  • Cheaper energy bills
