'Coalition will be greenest government ever' says Davey
6 March 2012

In his first parliamentary performance as Energy and Climate Change Secretary Ed Davey reaffirmed the Government's dedication to the environment.

I wish to take my first parliamentary opportunity to reaffirm the coalition's commitment to being the greenest government ever.

Ed Davey, Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change

Clean energy a boost for the economy

The Government and Opposition agree the move to clean energy will help provide:

  • Skilled jobs for young people.
  • A strong economy.
  • A reduction in fuel poverty.

I do, however, agree with the Opposition's contention that the low-carbon transition has the potential to be a major source of jobs and growth for the United Kingdom

Ed Davey

Challenges ahead

While these are encouraging signs, some challenges remain:

  • The Government should commit to a community tariff - so local communities can more easily produce clean British energy.
  • There should be a public enquiry into the influence of the big six energy companies.

Stand up for clean energy

We should have clean British energy but the big six energy companies are keeping us hooked on expensive and dirty fossil fuels.
