International Climate19 June 2009
Friends of the Earth International has launched a new campaign to demand climate change.
The next major international talks on climate change will take place in Copenhagen in December.
Ahead of the talks we're calling on rich countries to take action to prevent the worst consequences of climate change.
Historical debt
Developed countries have been pumping out emissions for hundreds of years.
Now they must show leadership and cut their greenhouse gas emissions by at least 40% by 2020.
Domestic action
They must make these cuts at home and not buy their way out of what needs to be done.
Offsetting emissions doesn't tackle climate change.
Did you know?
Developed countries - with less than 20% of the world's population- were responsible for 76% of all emissions between 1850 to 2002.
Climate debt
Rich countries must also pay their fair share of the costs.
Finance is needed to support developing countries in:
- Developing cleanly
- Adapting to the impacts of climate change.
Forest conservation
Deforestation is responsible for almost a fifth of global greenhouse gas emissions.
We need to protect our forests and reduce our emissions at the same time.
But the Government is taking a dangerous gamble with the world's forests.
Press for change
Thousands of people around the world have already taken action. They've urged world leaders to do the right thing ahead of the Copenhagen talks.
