10th Jun: A different perspective
10 June 2009

Young Friends of the Earth Europe have played a key part in the Bonn talks.

Sam Fleet is a Communications Intern at Friends of the Earth Europe. He gave us his take on events so far.

Sam says:

After the first week of actions and media work the majority of Young Friends of the Earth Europe have left Bonn.

So I was thrown abruptly into the world of policy.

Communication challenge

The day began with a Friends of the Earth International meeting. Policy experts discussed the daily agenda and also gave updates from the previous day.

Obviously what was being discussed was incredibly important but I still struggled to understand everything.

Branch action

Meanwhile outside the centre activists dressed as trees joined dancers to protest against deforestation.

They held a minute's silence for people in Peru who lost their lives protesting against land grabbing in the Amazon.

Slow progress

There is a glimmer of hope with some progress being made on deforestation but the talks do not appear to be going well.

The general feeling is still one of frustration.

Rich industrialised countries are failing to put forward sufficient emissions reduction targets.

And it is disappointing that offsetting and other false solutions still feature prominently.
