Selly Oak MP calls for a stronger Energy Bill9 June 2011
Steve McCabe MP for Selly Oak joined the Big Climate Reconnection to support a stronger Energy Bill.
A public meeting organised by Stop Climate Chaos on 2 June at the University of Birmingham highlighted the issue of fuel poverty and the need for a stronger Energy Bill.
The speakers were:
- Steve McCabe (MP for Selly Oak)
- Dr Rosie Day (fuel poverty researcher, University of Birmingham)
- Quentin Given (climate campaigner, Friends of the Earth)
- Patrick Garratt (Director, Purple Frog Property).
- Alan Weaver from Midlands Trades Union Council (Chair)
A lively debate provided much food for thought. The meeting was told that independent research on fuel poverty carried out by Dr Day supports much of what Friends of the Earth is calling for.
Patrick Garratt said that many landlords would like the law to be strengthened in the private rented sector. This would ensure a level playing field for those who invest in improving their properties.
Steve McCabe has already publicly declared his support for Friends of the Earth's proposed changes to the Energy Bill. He told the meeting that he'll do what he can to strengthen the Bill.
