Energy Bill ties UK into gas as MPs call for green jobs29 November 2012
The Government publishes its long-awaited Energy Bill - but it's not good news for the environment or the economy.
With no target to clean up our electricity by 2030, the Bill gives the go-ahead for a new dash for gas. It risks busting our targets for tackling climate change and could ramp up fuel bills.
The Bill also risks losing green business overseas because renewable energy companies are unable to plan for the future.
Green jobs
This week over 40 MPs from across the political divide called for a decarbonisation target - cutting carbon emissions - to help create green jobs.
A target would set us on the path to clean energy in the UK and increase investor confidence in the market.
Amendment
Both Labour and Tim Yeo, Conservative Chair of the influential Energy and Climate Change Committee, have said they will fight for a target in the Bill.
This is great news. We need as many MPs as possible speaking in favour of a clean power target when the Bill is debated in two weeks time.
MPs must support an amendment for a decarbonisation target to give business confidence to invest in clean energy, and to deliver new jobs, investment and a power system we can all afford.
