Strong man 'Energy Bill' flexes muscles at Westminster
18 May 2011

MPs from all parties helped our bodybuilder 'Energy Bill' get in shape outside Parliament today.

These MPs are all backing Friends of the Earth's call for key changes to the Government's new Energy Bill - being debated now.

A strong, green law could help us save energy and tackle climate change in homes and communities around the country.

But the current Bill has significant room for improvement.

We want the Government to lead a nationwide refurb to make sure no one lives in a cold home - and to beef up support to help councils tackle climate change in their areas.

Friends of the Earth is calling for three vital changes:

  • Councils and community action on climate change
Make sure every area does its to help meet legal targets to cut carbon emissons, with clear expert advice.
    Warmer homes for all
A Government plan to insulate enough homes to end fuel poverty - when people can't afford to properly heat their homes - and meet carbon targets.
  • More protection for tenants in cold rented homes
Bring forward a new minimum energy-efficiency standard that homes rented from a landlord or lettings agency would have to meet from 2018, and raise it over time. Legal protection from eviction for tenants who ask landlords for improvements. And a bigger tax break to encourage landlords to act early to help households facing fuel poverty next winter.

What you can do

The Energy Bill is being debated right now - and your MP can help make the difference.

A crucial Energy Bill vote is coming soon - we need MPs to stand up and be counted to help fight climate change and create green communities we can be proud of.

Please ask Energy and Climate Change Minister, Greg Barker, to back a fully-charged Energy Bill to give the UK the green overhaul we need.
