Energy Bill and Green Deal need fixing
26 June 2012

Current energy policies and the Government's draft Energy Bill won't deliver secure, clean and affordable power - agree organisations across the energy sector.

They added that this would result in the UK missing out on some key economic growth opportunities.

The organisations included environmental and consumer groups, technological providers and members of the supply chain.

What's wrong with UK energy policy?

There was consensus that current policies won't:

  • Save enough energy to meet carbon targets.
  • Protect the poorest people.
  • Sufficiently boost renewable energy or create green jobs.

How can we fix it?

They agreed that policies should reduce energy demand - the cheapest power station is the one we don't have to build.

They're also calling for the Government to:

  • Include a target for the electricity supply to be almost zero-carbon by 2030.
  • Use the funds from taxing carbon emissions to boost energy efficiency in homes.
  • Back simple and predictable renewable energy policies to encourage new investors.
  • Meet our energy needs with a wide range of clean sources, including community owned schemes.
