Final Demand training in Doncaster4 November 2011
If you live in Yorkshire, why not come along to our training evening to find out more about our national & local energy campaigning?
9 November, 7.15-9pm, Doncaster Friends Meeting House
Friends of the Earth has recently launched a new campaign called "Final Demand".
We want:
- to change the debate about energy
- to win more public and political support for renewables
- a public inquiry into the "Big 6" energy companies, and their power over consumers and politicians.
The Government has just announced plans to reduce the "Feed In Tariff", which pays owners of solar panels back for the energy they feed into the national grid.
The plans have the potential to halt the growth of the UK solar industry, and would be a major step backwards in tackling climate change. The Government is fast-tracking the consultation, giving us very little time to respond.
At the same time, large areas of Yorkshire have been licenced for shale gas extraction, or "fracking". Fracking is an environmentally damaging and under-regulated form of natural gas production.
Approval has been granted for the construction of a large scale biomass/energy from waste plant at Ferrybridge, and a new gas turbine plant at Thorpe Marsh near Doncaster. Many of you will also be aware of other fossil fuel energy projects in Yorkshire that need rejecting, or renewables plans that need supporting.
The evening in Doncaster is an opportunity to:
- find out more about the Final Demand campaign
- share your knowledge about local energy issues
- begin conversations with other local campaigners about working together.
For example, to respond to the Feed In Tariff consultation, we're hoping to organise events with MPs visiting renewable energy installations across Yorkshire. We'd like to do this with Ed Miliband, Caroline Flint, Nick Clegg, Jason McCartney, Julian Sturdy, Julian Smith and others. And we'd like to hear and share your ideas about what we can do, too.
Newcomers to Friends of the Earth are more than welcome, and refreshments will be provided. Please RSVP to Rachel to reserve your place: [email protected] / 0113 242 8151
You can also find more information on this flyer - please circulate widely
