Final energy demand
27 October 2011

As part of its new energy campaign, Final Demand, Friends of the Earth took to the streets of central London recently.

We sent out spoof representatives of the six biggest energy providers - the 'Big Six'.

They thanked their customers for financing their profits. At the same time, they pointed out that already steep household bills are likely to rocket further - by up to £300 by 2020.

At the Government's Energy Summit, a splinter group of five campaigners handed out postcards to energy company bosses, Energy Secretary Chris Huhne and Business Secretary Vince Cable.

It was great to take our message directly to the powers that be - and the energy companies themselves, who didn't look very amused. Chris Huhne managed a smile though.

Taming the Big Six

The six biggest energy providers in Britain are expected to increase their profit margins by £110 per customer in the cold winter months. The summit changed very little in how those companies operate.

Instead of investigating and reforming the energy sector, the Government advises consumers to shop more rigorously to avoid being ripped off.

A public inquiry

Friends of the Earth is pushing for a urgent public inquiry into the power of the big six energy companies.

The charity is warning that the UK's dependency on fossil fuels will worsen the inequality of soaring profits and rocketing bills.

In order to make sure our energy system works for consumers and the environment, Friends of the Earth is calling for:

  • A public inquiry into the power and influence of the Big Six.
  • Urgent action to stop the Government killing off our clean British energy providers.
