Food Chain campaign off to a sizzling start
30 March 2009

Over 100 MPs have already woken up to the damaging impacts of intensive meat and dairy production.

Less than a month since its launch, they have got behind Early Day Motion (EDM) 845.

This parliamentary petition demonstrates their concern over the impacts of Britain's factory farming system.

This is not about finding a back-door way to promote vegetarianism or veganism but about climate change.

What's their beef?

The EDM calls on Government to:

  • Assess the UK's role in the global meat and dairy industry.
  • Investigate our dependence on soy-based animal feed.
  • Act to reduce the UK livestock sector's impact.
  • Support farmers producing planet-friendly meat and dairy.

But many MPs still don't know about the hidden chain which links animals in British factory farms to rainforest destruction in South America.

The animals are pumped full of protein to make them grow ultra-quickly.

This protein is provided by soy from South America, where rainforests are being trashed to make space for plantations.

Planet-friendly farming is possible, but Government needs to change the system.

Government is more likely to act if many more MPs sign the EDM.

MPs listen when thousands of their voters get behind Friends of the Earth's campaigns - so please ask your MP to sign EDM 845 today.
