Government abandons forest sell off
5 July 2012

Friends of the Earth welcomes Government u-turn on the sale of public forests and woodland.

Responding to the report from the Independent Panel on Forestry, Nature Campaigner Paul de Zylva says:

We're delighted with the panel's findings and Government agreement to give their privatisation plans the chop. England's woodlands are precious public assets that provide real value for money by enhancing our wildlife, health and leisure.

The Government first announced the sell off in 2011 - causing a public outcry.

As a result the Government apologised and appointed the Bishop of Liverpool, the very Reverend James Jones, to lead the independent forest panel.

He released his report to the Government on 4 July.
