Over a million call on Downing Street to end fossil fuel subsidies18 June 2012
Friends of the Earth, 350, Avaaz, Push Europe and others today delivered two petitions against fossil fuel subsidies to 10 Downing Street.
We took more than 1 million signatures from people asking for an end to fossil fuel subsidies now.
Why fossil fuel subsidies must end
Governments spend almost US$100 bn of tax payers' money every year supporting dirty energy like oil, coal and gas. These subsidies:
- Drive dangerous climate change.
- Fail to meet the needs of billions of the world's poor, who have no access to energy.
- Could be spent on promoting clean, safe, affordable renewable energy instead.

This timely call comes as world leaders head to the UN Earth Summit in Rio. They'll be discussing fossil fuel subsidies and clean energy there.
