Government to count planes27 October 2008
The Government has agreed to include emissions from aviation and shipping in the Climate Change Bill.
This meets the third and final major demand of Friends of the Earth's Big Ask campaign for a strong Climate Change Law.
This is great news.
Loophole closed
Previously the Bill excluded emissions from the UK's share of international aviation and shipping emissions.
It meant a large and rapidly increasing source of our greenhouse gas emissions could continue to grow unchecked.
Now all emissions are to be counted in the Climate Change Bill.
This makes it not just a world first, but also a world class piece of legislation.
Final Stages
But nothing is certain until MPs have voted through the amendments.
MPs will vote on this and other amendments in the Report Stage vote on Tuesday 28th October.
The Bill will then go to the House of Lords for approval about two weeks later and should be passed into Law by December.
You can still email your MP to make sure they vote to improve the Bill on our Press for change page.
