Government gas plans exposed
6 November 2012

The government has quadrupled its estimate for how much of our power will be produced from gas by 2030.

The new figures exposed by Friends of the Earth would break carbon targets and go against the recommendations of the independent Committee on Climate Change.

The news raises fears of a 'dash for gas' that would undermine investor confidence in the UK's growing green economy.

Jobs threat

It comes as leaders of Britain's renewable and energy companies made a unified call to cut the carbon from our energy system by 2030.

The companies said failing to include a carbon cutting target in the upcoming Energy Bill would threaten investment and jobs in the growing green energy sector.

The CBI has stated that green growth was last year responsible for a third of all UK economic growth.

No blank cheque

Friends of the Earth is leading calls to green our electricity and end our reliance on imported fossil fuels.

Ed Davey has been caught writing a blank cheque to the gas industry.

With the impacts of climate change becoming more obvious, this is precisely the wrong time to be committing public money to new fossil fuel investment.
