A future for green jobs in Merthyr
28 January 2011

In December 2010 the energy giant Covanta submitted its application to build one of the UK's largest incinerators inĀ Merthyr Tydfill.

Undermining targets

The proposal threatens to undermine the Welsh Assembly Government's 70% target on waste reduction and recycling.

This target would encourage more efficient usage of materials and generate green jobs for the region.

Green jobs

Friends of the Earth published a report in January fully supporting this.

Our report states that through the insulation of homes and installation of small-scale renewables, South Wales would have the potential to generate 3000 jobs.

These findings were welcomed by 3 of the 4 political parties in the region, and provide a better alternative to the 650 jobs which the incinerator proposes to create.

Friends of the Earth will continue to follow the Covanta application and support the community of Merthyr in their campaign against this proposal.
