Government failing to deliver green transport4 August 2011
A new report has revealed how government, nationally and locally, is failing to deliver sustainable transport.
The research by Halcrow for Friends of the Earth and Sustrans shows that the Government and Local Councils are ignoring advice from the Committee on Climate Change to introduce schemes that cut traffic.
Smarter Travel
"Smarter Travel Choices" are measures that cut traffic and increase walking, cycling and use of public transport.
They've been successfully piloted in three English towns and have proved popular.
They also improve health and are excellent value for money compared to building traffic-generating new roads.
But the report shows that delivering sustainable travel is a low priority for many local councils.
Friends of the Earth is calling on the Government and local councils to prioritise sustainable travel.
Transport Campaigner Richard Dyer said:
Government at all levels must ensure that funding provided for sustainable travel is at least that in the pilot project towns
