Recycling Reform in Harrogate4 February 2011
A campaign by Harrogate Friends of the Earth to take on waste management in the area has hit the headlines across the region.
The group's incineration campaign appeared on the regional news 3 times, and their recycling campaign was supported by their local newspaper.
The group worked with North Yorkshire Waste Action Group, their local communities and over 40 parish councils to oppose the massive incinerator proposed for Allerton Park.
They helped gather a massive 10,000 signatures against the incinerator.
The council still passed the initial planning application - but the group continues to campaign on this burning issue and will be challenging the application.
Alongside this, the group ran a campaign to reform recycling in Harrogate and demonstrate the alternatives to incineration. They gained the support of the council, the local media and over 1,300 people from their communities.
On 19 January, the council made a commitment to invest £3 million into the system which will dramatically improve recycling rates in the area.
