Road threatens key Site of Special Scientific Interest 1 May 2007
ACT NOW
Fight the planning application for the Bexhill to Hastings Link Road
Friends of the Earth South East and the Hastings Alliance are working to prevent controversial proposals for a new road through countryside north of Bexhill and Hastings.
East Sussex County Council has recently submitted the planning application for the scheme and we urgently need people to object before 6th July, 2007.
The beautiful Combe Haven valley
The chosen route passes within metres of the Combe Haven Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), designated as one of the nation's most important wildlife sites.
If approved, the road would open up a large greenfield site for commercial and housing development and promote more out-of-town building.
The Bexhill to Hastings Link Road would:
- Destroy the character of one of the most tranquil areas in the South East.
- Damage an area of recognised national historical and archaeological importance.
- Move traffic congestion and air quality problems from the A259 to other parts of Hastings.
- Cause higher levels of traffic in and around both towns.
- Result in an extra 5,426 tonnes of CO2 emissions - a damaging greenhouse gas.
- Be bad for existing town centre businesses.
- Cost £89 million of taxpayers money - which could be spent on other, less damaging transport projects.
What you can do
- Go to the Hastings Alliance website to register your objections before 6th July.
- Download the leaflet (PDF†) for ideas on writing your own personal letter.
It will only take a few moments but could help to protect our countryside for future generations to enjoy
