A new group for Havering
6 October 2010

Havering Friends of the Earth are a new group working in the London Borough of Havering to spread the word about environmental issues.

They recently held a launch meeting for local people to find out more about the group.

The group have worked for several months to raise their profile in the area - posters went up on local notice boards and in shops plugging the launch meeting.

On the night

The evening included a talk on Friends of the Earth's history and a lively discussion of local issues the group could get involved in.

Everyone took time to look at the resources on offer and even posed for a photo with Food Chain themed cow masks.

Campaign plans

Looking forward the group hope to highlight topics like:

  • Waste and recycling
  • Wildlife and habitats
  • Transport
  • Food and farming
  • Power generation and energy efficiency.

Fixing the Food Chain

They are also hoping to join thousands of others around the country in calling for local MPs to back a new meat and dairy law.

I suspect there are many people in Havering who don't think of themselves as environmental activists and yet tick all the right boxes when it comes to conserving resources and repairing and re-using things.

The group are keen to hear from local people in the borough who would like to join them. Their next meeting will be in Upminster on Tuesday 2 November. Find out more.
