Huhne warms to task of taking on energy giants
9 September 2011

Energy Secretary Chris Huhne has warned the Big Six energy companies that they need to double their insulation rates.

Mr Huhne said that domestic insulation rates need to be radically increased to avoid missing Government targets for saving energy.

Friends of the Earth's Energy Campaigner, Paul Steedman believes people are infuriated by the huge profits being made by energy companies.

The companies' addiction to costly fossil fuels and heat-leaking homes mean that 5.5 million households face the misery of homes cold enough to harm their health this winter.

The Government plans to bring in a minimum energy efficiency standard for rented homes in 2018. But this is two years after its legal duty to end fuel poverty.

Friends of the Earth is calling on the Government to:

  • Bring forward its planned energy efficiency standard for rented homes.
  • Give councils a key role in co-ordinating action to insulate homes.
  • Deliver additional funding to encourage an energy efficiency drive.

Friends of the Earth believes that current policies do not deliver benefits fast enough. We must reduce energy waste to stabilise fuel bills over the next decade - and develop renewable energy like wind and wave power.

The Government should bring forward rules to make landlords responsible for insulating rented homes - and end the stranglehold on the energy market by the 'Big Six'.

What you can do

You can tell the Housing Minister to bring forward plans to save energy and improve insulation.
