Huhne challenged at public meeting in Eastleigh
28 January 2011

Voters in Eastleigh challenged Energy Secretary and local MP Chris Huhne to ensure all councils help fight climate change

Southampton Friends of the Earth organised a packed public meeting of over 100 people to stress the need for a local approach to slashing CO2.

I can't remember a meeting as big as this in Eastleigh - that must be a testament to the pulling power of Friends of the Earth.

Chris Huhne MP

The Minister came under pressure from our Executive Director and Eastleigh residents to make council and community action on climate part of the Government's new Energy Bill.

Friends of the Earth are calling for carbon budgets setting emissions for every local area. And we want more money and less hassle to help councils get behind cost-effective green measures like insulating homes and improving public transport.

This would:

  • Create jobs
  • Slash fuel bills
  • Reduce climate-changing CO2 emissions

Across the UK, communities like Eastleigh are doing groundbreaking work to cut climate-changing emissions.

But too many areas are being left behind.

Take action

Please ask your MP to back a new law to help councils tackle climate change.
