Joining forces18 June 2010
Tottenham & Wood Green Friends of the Earth and Muswell Hill and Hornsey Friends of the Earth have campaigned successfully for Haringey to Get Serious About CO2.
Now the two groups have joined forces to fix the Food Chain.
Public launch
To mark the occasion they held an outdoor event at Railway Fields Nature Reserve in Haringey.
Food campaigner Vicki Hird spoke to an audience of almost fifty people. She explained the link between:
- our consumption of meat and dairy
- the destruction of forests
- habitats and communities in South America
Sustainable picnic
The groups involved lots of local people from the Sustainable Haringey food growing network.
They provided organic, Fair Trade and local food and wine for a picnic. They even foraged wild plants from surrounding areas for a salad.
Spreading the word
Attendance at the event was boosted by using Friends of the Earth's low cost mailing service - hundreds of local people were sent an invitation.
Local councillors were also invited - and 4 came along. They included the council's new lead member for sustainability - who the group will soon be talking to about the council's food procurement policies.
Following it up
The groups collected contact details for everyone who attended and asked them to sign a petition in support of the campaign.
They plan to begin publicly campaigning at several major events in Haringey including Tottenham Festival on 19 June.
At the same time they're calling on local MPs to back our call for a Sustainable Livestock Bill.
Press for change
Ask your MP to back new meat and dairy law. Take action now.
