Labour rebels demand strong climate law
24 October 2008

56 Labour MPs are backing an amendment to the Climate Change Bill to include aviation and shipping.

Introducing a climate change law which doesn't cover emissions from planes and ships is like introducing a drink driving law that doesn't count whisky.

The amendment is also supported by the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats.

If they all voted for it next Tuesday (28 October) it would be passed.

Ministers are now under pressure to strengthen the Bill themselves - or risk defeat in Parliament next week.

Making progress

Last week Climate and Energy Secretary Ed Miliband announced that the Bill's target would be strengthened.

The law will now require the UK to cut greenhouse gas emissions by at least 80% (of 1990 levels) by 2050.

The Big Ask

Friends of the Earth has led the campaign for a new climate change law (The Big Ask).

The Big Ask campaign has been supported by hundreds of thousands of people across the UK.
