Companies, charities, unions and faith groups calling for a clean power target
20 February 2013

Leading companies are calling on MPs to back a 'green jobs amendment' to the Energy Bill that will boost the economy and tackle climate change.

SSE, Cisco, and Tridos Bank are among the big business names calling for a target to clean up UK power by 2030.

They've signed a joint statement alongside charities such as Friends of the Earth, and unions and faith groups, calling on MPs to act.

Green jobs now

The target has been put forward in a 'green jobs amendment' to the Energy Bill, currently going through Parliament. It was tabled earlier this month by Tim Yeo MP and Barry Gardiner MP.

It requires the Government to set a target by April 2014, to take the carbon out of our electricity, in line with advice given by The Committee on Climate Change.

As well as tackling climate change, the amendment would boost the economy and create thousands of UK jobs.

If we're going to make the UK a world leading low-carbon economy and create thousands of skilled jobs, MPs must urgently step in where the Coalition has dithered and include a target in the Energy Bill to clean up our electricity by 2030.

Andrew Pendleton, Head of Campaigns.

BBC Dragon Deborah Meaden, Ambassador for Friends of the Earth's Clean British Energy campaign, has also given her full support. She said a target would give renewable energy firms and their supply chains confidence to invest in Britain.

By backing the amendment, MPs will help to:

  • Tackle climate change
  • Restore investor certainty in the UK energy market
  • Create thousands of green jobs
  • Make the UK a world leader in clean energy
