Serious intent in Leicester
20 October 2009

Leicester Friends of the Earth got its Get Serious About CO2 campaign off to a roaring start this summer.

The group staged a fantastic photo opportunity at the town hall between Friends of the Earth Executive Director Andy Atkins, Lord Mayor of Leicester Roger Blackmore and the City Council's cabinet leader for the environment Sarah Russell.

The meeting got good local news coverage, and a strong endorsement from local MP Sir Peter Soulsby.

Since then the group has been building public support for Get Serious About CO2, getting 60 cards signed on its first stall.

Now the members are looking at what else they can do to raise profile and are considering giving the Lord Mayor a green challenge.

Group member Malcolm Hunter says:

"We're considering publicly challenging the Mayor to get to all of his appointments by bicycle for a day to highlight the part transport plays in local CO2 emissions. He's agreed in principle, but has a raised a few concerns about practicalities."
