Shadow Minister says new energy law risks being 'a waste of time'
20 April 2011

Labour's shadow climate change Minister Luciana Berger has criticised the Government's new Energy Bill at a public meeting in Liverpool.

The Liverpool Wavertree MP said the proposals to help the UK cut carbon lack clear targets .

It's all very well us spending weeks and months putting forward an energy bill, but if it doesn't have some tangible outcomes then it's a complete waste of time.

Friends of the Earth's Mike Childs joined the MP and community group Faiths4Change's Annie Merry at the Stop Climate Chaos event part organised by Liverpool Friends of the Earth.

Fighting for a fully-charged Energy Bill

The Government wants its Energy Bill to slash UK emissions and create thousands of jobs. But Friends of the Earth believes it is not up to the job in its current state.

The Bill has no legally binding targets for cutting carbon.

And the Green Bank supposed to help fund the shift to green energy is nowhere near big enough.

£3billion investment over the next four years is a drop in the ocean compared to the money needed to support the UK's infant renewable industries.

Luciana Berger

A strong, green Energy Bill would benefit everyone. A switch to renewable energy and well-insulated homes would mean:

  • Thousands of new jobs
  • Warmer homes
  • Cheaper energy bills
