Help avert a marine disaster7 March 2012
Malcolm Hunter of Leicester Friends of the Earth recently had an article about Marinet and their current Common Fisheries Policy reform campaign published in a local paper.
The campaign aims to replenish depleted fish stocks by calling for a reform of the Common Fisheries Policy.
Numbers of fish in the seas around the UK are now so depleted that they can only meet our needs for six months of the year.
Marinet is looking to rebuild fish stocks to post World War 2 levels and ensure that they're sufficient to meet our needs all year round, year after year. This will allow us to regain food security and restore wider health to our seas.
Malcolm went on to discuss how this could be achieved through the establishment of a network of no-take marine reserves, providing protected areas in which both fish stocks and the whole ecosystem can recover.
