A merry month of May for bee action24 May 2013
There's been a hive of activity across the country this month as part of The Bee Cause.
Friends of the Earth's local groups have organised over 60 events in May, including:
- planting bee-friendly seeds for Bee Worlds
- guided Bee Walks
- running stalls to collect petition signatures
- creative events from a poetry reading to a 'Mystery Bee Tour'
MPs were invited to many of the events and were asked to back our call for a National Bee Action Plan.
It's been a fantastic few weeks for the campaign. Huge thanks to everyone who's taken part.
Here are some highlights
In Tonbridge and Malling a newly formed Friends of the Earth group held their first ever event. They took part in the annual Lions Charities Walk dressed as bees, to raise funds and awareness for the campaign.
In Chipping Norton, David Cameron turned up to Oxford Friends of the Earth's stall. They chatted to him about protecting bees.
The group in Eastbourne hosted a ceremony (pictured) to mark the creation of a 'Bee World' in a local park. This was one of many bee-friendly spaces created this year through a partnership between the group and their local council.
Calling for national action
As part of all these events, groups have been asking MPs to support the campaign too.
Stephen Lloyd MP was at the Eastbourne 'Bee World' ceremony and has backed Friends of the Earths' call for a National Bee Action Plan:
I am absolutely delighted to support the bee initiative both locally and in parliament.[...] I particularly want to pat Eastbourne Borough Council and Friends of the Earth on the back for having planted 16 bee friendly beds since September 2012.
