Friends of the Earth helps farmers bring case against Shell
11 October 2012

Nigerian farmers and Friends of the Earth Netherlands are suing Shell over oil pollution in the Niger Delta.

It's the first time a Dutch multinational is facing an action in a home court over its activities abroad.

The court case follows hard on the heels of a documentary - broadcast by Dutch TV - about one of the world's largest oil disasters.

It covers three Dutch citizens visiting the Niger Delta. They witness the devastation first hand and question the role of the oil companies.

Watch the film - produced by Friends of the Earth Netherlands (Milieudefensie) and VARA TV.

In the pipeline?

The polluted area of the Niger Delta is larger than the recent BP disaster in the Gulf of Mexico.

Shell is one of the largest and oldest oil producers in Nigeria.

The consequences of contamination for local Nigerians have been severe.

Oil was floating on the surface of the creek and covered our fishponds, fields and crops
