National Policy Statements: Failing on Britain's future
5 July 2011

The Government adopted the National Policy Statements (NPSs) on Energy. These set out the need for big energy developments.

Friends of the Earth is concerned that the NPSs:

  • fail to outline how the UK will reach its climate change targets (as recommended by the Committee on Climate Change)
  • encourage new gas-fired power stations
  • classify incineration as renewable energy despite its high carbon emissions
  • set out the need and location for new nuclear power stations.

Unleashing the energy hungry monster

The Energy NPSs state that there's a need for all types of energy including new nuclear power stations.

This means issues - like safety and cost - will not be properly discussed in the planning examination process. And communities will miss out on the opportunity to raise their concerns.

Condemning communities

The Energy NPSs will encourage more projects like the monster incinerator in Merthyr Tydfil.

Projects like this could have a devastating impact on the local community, economy and environment.

Watch this video to hear what the people of Merthyr have to say about the planned incinerator.
