Insulate our homes and save lives and money18 October 2011
Cutting energy waste through measures like insulation could save households £458 a year.
uSwitch has found that UK households waste hundreds of pounds a year in unduly high energy bills.
The energy we waste heating our properties needlessly pumps tonnes of climate-changing emissions into the atmosphere.
Over a quarter of the UK's carbon emissions come from heating our homes and water.
A nationwide campaign to insulate our homes would:
- Protect people's health.
- Save families money on fuel bills.
- Create tens of thousands of jobs.
- Save the NHS millions of pounds.
A Department for Energy and Climate Change report notes that "global fossil fuel prices are the main drivers of energy prices in the UK".
Cutting the energy we waste and developing clean British energy offers the best hope of an end to nightmare price hikes.
Craig Bennett, Friends of the Earth
This clean energy would come from sources such as the sun, wind and waves.
And investing in renewable power would lower bills in the long run. It would:
- Reduce UK dependence on imported fossil fuel energy.
- Slash carbon emissions.
- Protect households from rocketing fossil fuel prices.
