New planning framework fails to see past profit margins
8 August 2011

On the 25 July the Government published its new draft planning framework which we think will allow unsustainable development.

This important new framework will inform the planning system and all new development in England.

Friends of the Earth is concerned that this new planning framework fails to recognise that planning is not just about profit margins.

Worryingly the draft National Planning Policy Framework mentions that:

The default answer to development is "yes".

Unless the new framework is improved this will make it difficult for local authorities to refuse inappropriate and damaging developments.

Instead of saying yes to all development the planning system should ensure that development is sustainable and that people are properly involved. Development must respect our environmental limits.

Naomi Luhde-Thompson, Friends of the Earth.

Please take action to improve our planning system.
