Newcastle MP joins call for stronger Energy Bill 9 June 2011
Newcastle residents heard their local MP call for a strong Energy Bill at a public meeting organised by Newcastle and Gateshead Friends of the Earth.
The audience heard from Chi Onewurah MP, Simon Bowens from Friends of the Earth, Ron Campbell of National Energy Action and Wendy Taylor, a former Newcastle councillor who headed environment, sustainability and transport.
The MP for Newcastle upon Tyne expressed concern at the delay in making it illegal for landlords to let dangerously cold and draughty homes.
Newcastle is one of the cities with the lowest property ownership in the country. If tenants can only ask landlords for improvements in 2018, this is too long to wait, why not now?
Chi Onewaruh MP
Friends of the Earth's Simon Bowen encouraged attendees to continue to lobby their MP.
He also said that 1 in 4 households in the constituency are living in fuel poverty.
Ms Onewurah said her inbox was filling up with messages calling for the Energy Bill to be strengthened.
She added that she was sceptical about the bill in its current state.
Take action
A stronger Energy Bill will lead to:
- Big cuts in climate changing emissions
- Warmer homes and cheaper fuel bills
- Tens of thousands of new jobs
Please ask your MP to support a strong Energy Bill now.
