Norwich MP urged to back stronger Energy Bill
10 June 2011

Norwich South MP Simon Wright was urged to strengthen the Energy Bill at a public meeting organised by Norwich and Norfolk Friends of the Earth.

A large audience including councillors and the local Women's Institute turned out to hear from their MP.

Speakers Darren Shirley from WWF and Liz Hutchins from Friends of the Earth explained that the new bill aims to green our buildings and communities.

But they also explained it will do very little without major improvement.

They called on Mr Wright, one of 19 committee members debating the Bill, to ensure the Bill tackled:

  • energy efficiency
  • fuel poverty
  • local council action on climate change

Mr Wright has previously pledged his support for local action on climate change.

He's also one of 181 MPs to have signed EDM 653 calling for minimum energy efficiency standards for private rented homes.

Mr Wright re-stated the importance of action in these areas. But he didn't pledge his support for related change to the Bill in committee.

My role is to scrutinise. I will look at both sides of the argument and then decide
