Giant elephant visits Parliament to call for nuclear-free energy future
28 April 2011

Friends of the Earth has handed a petition to Government signed by tens of thousands of people calling for a safer energy future.

And we turned some heads by taking a giant white elephant with us to Westminster.

The white elephant symbolised expensive and unnecessary nuclear power as part of our campaign for more renewable energy instead of new nuclear power stations.

Nuclear power is a white elephant - it's massively expensive and we don't need it

Martyn Williams, Friends of the Earth

The evidence is clear: we can meet our energy needs without gambling on nuclear.

We need to harness the UK's largely untapped potential for solar, wind and tidal power, creating thousands of jobs in the process.

And we should use energy more cleverly in the first place, for example by properly insulating homes and businesses.

Our recent poll showed more than 75% of people want the Government's top energy priority to be investing in more renewable power and slashing energy waste in homes and businesses.

People want clean and safe energy - the Government needs to urgently refocus its energy policy, starting by improving the weak energy saving measures within its new Energy Bill

Say no to bailing out the nuclear industry

The coalition Government claims our taxes won't subsidise nuclear power.

But a new law being debated opens the way for public bailouts if the cost of dealing with nuclear waste spirals.

Instead of risking a nuclear bailout, the Government should set this money aside for nationwide energy saving and investment in renewable power.
