Nuclear power would put our energy future in hands of French Government
13 March 2012

Four former directors of Friends of the Earth claim the coalition are handing over our climate security to the Government of France.

In a letter to key Government ministers Jonathon Porritt, Tony Juniper, Charles Secrett and Tom Burke condemn the coalition's plans.

Plans which would allow EDF to build nuclear power stations in the UK.

Problems with new nuclear

The letter warns that new nuclear would:

  • Be a massive rip-off for the British tax payer
Financial risks would be passed from French to British households.
  • Waste money that could be spent on clean British energy
Creating jobs and growth in the UK.

This report is spot on - Britain must meet its energy needs while keeping to its legally-binding climate targets, but gambling on a massive nuclear building programme to achieve it is far too risky.
